The Mind on the Mat

One of the things I do on my yoga site, www.yogayak.com (Free Online Yoga Classes!) is publish a yoga blog, I've decided to start publishing the blog here too...so here is the first one I've chosen...

Don’t use ahimsa as a noun, but as a verb. It’s a process and a way of life that requires a lot of self-discipline. But I believe it’s worth it.

~Priya Florence Shah

Ahimsa, like asana, is an active part of yoga practice; it requires that we are mindful of how our actions and reactions may impact those around us. This is often more difficult in practice, it means that we must be responsible for not taking things personally and owning our speech, thoughts and deeds.

Ahimsa does not mean that we should not express ourselves when we are feeling negative emotions, but that we find a way to communicate our feelings without judgement and without harming first our Selves and then others.

Himsa, the opposite of Ahimsa always harms us first: Practice ahimsa, as an active and mindful part of your yoga/meditation practice.

Yours in yoga,
