Any event, good or bad, causes a stress response if we are unprepared for the situation at hand. Our stress responses exist to ensure safety in our world, for our dependents and ourselves; its function is to respond to danger, not Life itself.

What is Life? Life, in a yogic context, is summed up as those things in day to day existence that bring us peace, joy, contentment and open, loving awareness. It is our basic nature to be peaceful, loving and open – not mistrustful, closed and afraid.

What is Stress? Well, virtually everything else - mostly non-life threatening and largely self-inflicted by placing monumental importance on incidental things. Stress is summed up in the things that cause us to act against our basic human nature.

Let’s take a moment and look at our range of day-to-day stress: we have job stress, family/relationship stress, health stress, money stress…and an overpowering amount of media that encourages stress, keeping us on the lookout for the quick fix, hungry for possessions and terrified about the state of the world today. We drink stress like coffee, consuming several cups of the stuff per day. As such we are habituated to stress, so accustomed to being in a heightened state that our natural stress responses become dulled by overuse. Our natural state of calm awareness is affected too, dulled from lack of use.

The truth is that most of our stress comes from perceived threats to our ego and identity - not our lives. Unfortunately, there are places in the world where day-to-day living is synonymous with real stress, but for most of us, it is not.

How does this relate to yoga practice? Living in a heightened state of alert, we tend to create stress for ourselves, in order to maintain the status quo. We bring stress to our yoga practice in the form of perceived ego threats: performance anxiety, comparison to others and personal criticism. We all know what happens when we experience stress, breathing becomes shallow and ragged and the mind becomes confused. So the solution is simple - come home to the breath; regain focus on your practice, your life, or the situation at hand. This transaction applies universally, to any situation and is the most efficient, effective way to combat stress and anxiety – simply breathe.

So now I’ve identified a concern, is this something to stress about? No, but as part of being mindful and practicing Ahimsa (non-violence), it benefits us all, instructors and students alike, to be aware of how stress plays out in life, in the body and in our fundamental regulating mechanism, the breath. A dozen deep breaths will remind you that Everything is already Ok.

In yoga,

Don’t use ahimsa as a noun, but as a verb. It’s a process and a way of life that requires a lot of self-discipline. But I believe it’s worth it.

~Priya Florence Shah

Ahimsa, like asana, is an active part of yoga practice; it requires that we are mindful of how our actions and reactions may impact those around us. This is often more difficult in practice, it means that we must be responsible for not taking things personally and owning our speech, thoughts and deeds.

Ahimsa does not mean that we should not express ourselves when we are feeling negative emotions, but that we find a way to communicate our feelings without judgement and without harming first our Selves and then others.

Himsa, the opposite of Ahimsa always harms us first: Practice ahimsa, as an active and mindful part of your yoga/meditation practice.

Currently, patents are only open to 'new discoveries', leading many large biotech and pharmaceutial companies to pick over the folk remedies of other cultures and claim them as their own to further their profits without returning any of those profits back to the indiginous peoples of the countries from which they take. These 'new' discoveries have in fact been used by societies for thousands of years.

In order to prevent further 'bioprospecting', the Indian government is creating the Traditional Knowledge Data Library (TKDL). This 30 million page database covers an immense amount of knowledge of herbs, medicinal practices, beauty secrets and eventually, yoga.

For more information, go to http://tkdl.res.in

India has set the stage for other countries to do the same and their efforts are supported by the World Intellectual Property Organization. China, Brazil and South Africa are among the countries taking steps to protect their indigenous wisdom.

Biopiracy is an increasing problem as society turns to natural remedies for healing that doesn't harm the body. If anyone has information about activism in this regard I'd love to see it posted here.
Go placidly amid the noise and the haste,
And remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible, without surrender,
Be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
And listen to others,
Even to the dull and ignorant;
They too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons;
They are vexatious to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
You may become vain or bitter,
For always, there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble,
It is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs,
For the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
Many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere
Life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love,
For in the face of all aridity and disenchantment,
It is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
Gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
Be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe
No less than the trees and the stars;
You have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
No doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
Whatever you conceive Him to be.
And whatever your labours and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life,
Keep peace in your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams,
It is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

Was interested to get an idea from others on yoga studios and teachers that you would recommend.

I have gone to several different studios (Yoga West, Bikrams Commercial, Semperviva, City Yoga) over the last years and have enjoyed them all for different reasons. As inner change occurs, then it gets reflected in the type of yoga I practice and the yoga studio that I attend.

Currently I am attending the Dahn Yoga centre on 8th and Burrard. I am enjoying their unique Korean/Taoist approach which they say is more about energy training than practicing classical hatha yoga postures (I don't expect ever to do a downward dog in these classes.) There are practices for opening energy flow along the meridians, accumulating energy, affirming positive beliefs about our body and ourselves, releasing stagnant energy and sensitizing ourselves to our inner energy body.

Because they have a Korean flavor (the teachers are not Korean), there is an etiquette to address the teachers which one doesn't usually find in other studios. Think of it as an exercise to increase the flexibility of your mind.

Also what is different is that you are encouraged to use your voice, whether it is in counting the number of times of a particular action or releasing stress.

I've noticed an increase in energy level and feeling good and positive from this practice.

I would say that Dahn yoga is not for everyone but it is a benefit to some.

This article is about the legal feud between Baron Baptiste and his business partner, Rolf Gates and is another example of the fact that yoga is not invulnerable to the greed and viciousness of corporate practice. Yoga in the Western world is in its infancy by comparison to yoga in its Eastern home and it has rapidly turned into another limb of the fitness industry, yoga for better abs, for a better ass and for more $$$....

I am developing an online yoga studio myself, and find myself keenly aware of the danger of corporately motivated yoga...I am doing my project to make money, sure, I want to be able to sustain the life I want by selling yoga online; however, I endeavour and am dedicated to presenting yoga in its entirety as a lifestyle practice as well asana practice, as well as history and limbs of yoga that do not require movement, such as jnana yoga and karma yoga. I hope for myself and my project that I am able to balance asana practice with karma yoga and present the practice as a whole, and provide service in the process.

Ekstasis Six Week Series – Vancouver – with Luna

This six weeks series will take you on a journey within, to reconnect
with the essence of who you are. Ecstatic dance is movement as a healing
and spiritual practice. It awakens the dancer within everyone despite
age, race, size, shape, or dance experience. Creating space within the
body opens the channel for creative life force energy to flow. Working
with the chakra system, five elements, breath and movement - it is a
powerful opportunity to shake loose and release any blocks that keep us
from our wholeness.

Every Thursday starting nov.13, 7:30 - 9:30PM at the Poi Studio
